Reading is an essential part of daily life here at West Felton, where we work hard to develop not only the mechanics of and strategies for reading but a genuine life long love for books.

We strive to hear our children read individually, within a group and with the whole class as often as possible. We ask for parents support with this and ask for children to read aloud at home daily.

One of my all time favourite picture books… The story is lively and engaging, told with a large, bold font and plenty of opportunities for interaction – but what really stands out is the thoughtful and intelligent use of superbly creative photography throughout. Child’s-eye perspectives and wickedly witty composition take reassuringly familiar scenes and inject a spark of gleeful imagination that will naturally and easily inspire both discussion and play.

A way in for reluctant readers… Not the most imaginative or descriptive text but can really help engage children who struggle to find a favourite book. Available online, a whole series of titles to choose from, including: The Avengers, Captain America and Star Wars.

The perfect stepping stone… Help is needed in Dull-on-Sea after a ghostly pirate ship draws up on the beach and a rash of burglaries from homes, and even from the museum, follows. Matilda knows just who to call on! Soon Jim Lad and the Jolley-Rogers are at hand. Can they get all the valuables back and defeat the ghastly and ghostly crew? And exciting story brilliantly told in words and pictures.

Engaging and Exciting… Following the storyline in longer books can be challenging, if children know something of the story before they start they have a firmer frame of reference. This is a brilliantly written book; with humour and excitement for all.

A beautifully told story… During  World War I in France two small girls discover a blind and hungry British soldier in the forest. They are fascinated with both him and his good luck charm, a tiny and perfect silver donkey. They bring him food and, over the course of getting to know them, he tells them a series of stories about the silver donkey, one of which is the Christmas story told in a new way.

Every child should hear this… This book gives a realistic look at the frankly brutal reality that is a hugely hushed topic in children’s books. Wonder is about something that we don't like to talk about because it is so rare and so sad. But August is a boy who can't be hushed into silence or invisibility in his world, simply because of the way he looks.
